Clemson Advocates Legislative Update--April 6, 2015
Story Date: 4/6/2015

THIS WEEK IN SOUTH CAROLINA
The South Carolina General Assembly is on furlough until Tuesday, April 14.

S.171 (Stipends for Student Athletes) was carried over by the Higher Education Subcommittee of the Senate Education Committee. If enacted, the bill would provide up to $5,000 each school year for student athletes (football and men's and women's basketball) who maintain at least a 2.0 grade-point average. In order to receive the stipend, student athletes would have to graduate and complete a financial literacy course. The amount paid out would not exceed the cost of attending the school. Stephanie Ellison, Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Services, testified on Clemson University's behalf.

The State Budget Process
The full Senate Finance Committee is scheduled to begin work on the budget the week of April 13.
