GPTA Alert: Georgia Tax Free Weekend 2014!

This weekend, August 1st-2nd, 2014 is TAX FREE WEEKEND! Take advantage of all the sales on school items while you are out. During this time, shoppers will be exempt from both the 4 percent state sales tax and any local sales taxes, allowing residents to receive a tax break on most school supplies, clothing, footwear and computer items.

Tax Free Weekend supports Georgia's economy because it increases work hours and result in higher payrolls. Consumer spending is approxiamtely 70% of our economy and Tax Free Weekend provides Georgia families with a tax break, estimating a savings of 7% total in taxes.

Georgia Retail Association estimates combined spending for back-to-school and college to reach approximately $2 billion statewide. According to the National Retail Federation, the average family with children in K-12 grades is expected to spend $669.28 on apparel, shoes, supplies, and electronics, up 5% from $634.78 last year.

Here are the guidelines and eligible items qualified for exemptions issued by the Georgia Department of Revenue: 

  • Clothing and footwear with a sales price of $100 or less per item.
  • Computers and prewritten computer software purchased for noncommercial home or personal use with a sales price of $1,000 or less.
  • School supplies, art supplies, school computer supplies, and school instructional materials purchased for noncommercial use with a sales price of $20 or less per item.
