In order to identify health and safety issues that negatively affect student achievement, the Georgia Department of Education developed the Georgia Student Health Survey II (GSHS II) five years ago.

More than 240,000 students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 participated in the survey in the 2009-2010 school year.   We are asking schools to again participate in the survey for the 2010-2011 school year.  The survey has been expanded to include all high school grades, 9, 10, 11, and 12.  Although Title IV-A funds for local school systems have been discontinued, there are multiple grant opportunities in the near future.  Expansion of the survey to all high school grades will increase the percentage of students participating and will increase the opportunity for your schools to be eligible for grants.  We encourage your continued support of the GSHS II and your use of the results from the survey in planning drug and violence prevention programs for your schools.

The 2010-2011 survey will be available on-line from October 1, 2010 through December 17.  If you choose to participate, each school in your district with grades 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12 will be given a predetermined URL address (web address) to allow access to the survey.  The URL addresses for your district will be sent to your Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Coordinator and to your Curriculum Director.

The survey consists of approximately 100 questions on a variety of health-related and school safety-related issues and takes less than 20 minutes to complete.  The survey should be administered to all students in grades 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.   Please review the survey and take the appropriate steps to plan for implementation of this valuable resource.
