Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA) President's Award
by Kerri Felder on 4/24/2017

The Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA)announced the recipients of the GSSA President's Award at its spring Bootstrap Conference in Savannah, Georgia.  These awards are given to superintendents for outstanding leadership in their school systems and communities.  This year, GSSA recognized Dr Jimmy Martin, the Superintendent of Harris County Schools, for the 2017 Georgia School Superintendent Association (GSSA) President's Award.

Dr. Martin was nominated for the award by the West Georgia RESA Director, Rachel Spates. GSSA Board members vote on the award recipients.

Dr. Martin currently serves as the Board Chair for the West Georgia RESA Board of Control. He is kind and patient in his leadership. He asks thoughtful questions, and has been instrumental in helping with some innovate budget and personnel planning this year.

As a superintendent in a high-performing district, Dr. Martin makes it a priority to minimize the impacts of ever-changing state mandates for his teachers so that they have time to do what is most important; teach. Dr. Martin told me that one of the finest days of his career was the day that he shared with his entire staff that the number of observations for TKES had been reduced for most teachers.

Central office staff share that Dr. Martin is very genuine in all his relationships. He has been very intentional in making the superintendent position personal in the district and community- to make it a position that is visible and accessible. To that end, Dr. Martin visits all of the Harris County schools weekly, and consistently shares his appreciation for teachers, parents and school and system leaders.

Rachel Spates stated, "It has been my honor to work with Dr. Jimmy Martin. He is a kind, thoughtful and humble servant-leader and will certainly represent the West Georgia RESA region well as the 2017 GSSA President’s Award recipient."

Congratulations to Dr. Martin!!!
