PAUL SHAW NAMED 2010 SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR
by Herbert Garrett on 12/7/2009

Dr. Paul Shaw, superintendent of the White County Schools, has been selected as Georgia’s 2010 Superintendent of the Year.  The announcement was made on Friday, December 4, by Steve Smith, president of the Georgia School Superintendents Association, during the GSSA/GSBA Winter Conference Awards Luncheon held at the Waverly Hotel in Cobb County.

Dr. Shaw was nominated for the prestigious award by the members of his board of education and was selected from a group of twenty-one nominees by a panel of former winners.  He will now become Georgia’s representative in the 2010 National Superintendent of the Year competition, co-sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), ARAMARK Education, and ING.

GSSA President Smith cited Dr. Shaw’s successful experience as a superintendent in both South Carolina and Georgia, his work in reorganizing his school system (resulting in financial savings to the taxpayers), the increase in White County’s high school graduation rate in recent years, and the addition of quality programs such as ROTC to the menu of opportunities for White County students.  In addition, Smith highlighted Dr. Shaw’s personal qualities, describing his “willingness to go the extra mile to see that the needs of his system are met” and his skill in building “parent, community, and taxpayer confidence.”  Dr. Shaw has already won GSSA’s Bill Barr Leadership Award, and he is widely known as a superintendent who spends time supporting and mentoring others.

GSSA adds its congratulations to the many already offered to Dr. Paul Shaw, Georgia’s 2010 Superintendent of the Year!
