Day 35 at the Capitol
3/10/2014

Another slow day for education legislation.  SB 288 (GHSA bill) will be on the House calendar tomorrow. Other than that -no education bills.  Just a reminder to express your opinion on SB 167 to brooks.coleman@house.ga.gov and mike.dudgeon@house.ga.gov.  The re-write of the bill should be available late today. I will share it as soon as I get it.  The House Education committee will vote on it Wednesday, March 12.

The Title 20 bill HB897 where GSSA has submitted written objections to sections 45 and 46 will likely be voted on this Thursday.  You can send your comments to lindsey.tippins@senate.ga.gov.  Chairman Tippins has asked for comments on the bill.  This is definitely not a clean-up bill but a bill that seeks to add policies to Title 20. Section 45 requires a payment schedule that is not doable for local districts as they would be required to send payment to their local charter schools by July 1st for funds to start-up the new year.  This is not fiscally prudent for many districts due to the timing of when local districts receive their state funding.  Section 46 has to do with the first right of refusal to local charters on a building owned by the local district.  This has so many consequences that are handcuffing the local district's ability to make a reasonable sale to save the local tax payer money.

Tomorrow brings us closer to the end! Day 36.
