Day 23 Today, the House and Senate met with a late start, due to the
weather. The Senate did not consider any
education related bills. The full House
reviewed HB76.
The House voted to pass the amended
version, and HB76 was immediately sent to the Senate. The Senate Appropriation Committees will start
holding hearings on the FY16 budget tomorrow. Due to the late start yesterday, HB76, the
FY16 Budget as amended by the House, was not voted on during the 22nd
day, as was reported earlier. There will be several education meetings on Monday to make up
for cancelations last week. The Senate Education and Youth Committee will meet to
continue their hearing on SB133
and SR287,
regarding the Opportunity School District. A substitute bill will be introduced. HB91,
Elimination of the Georgia High School Graduation Test, would allow students
who did not pass any section of the graduation test to receive a high school
diploma. This bill may be heard during
this meeting, if time permits. The House Education Academic Achievement and Curriculum Sub
Committee will hear: HB406[MS1] [MS2] [MS3] ,
which would provide for age-appropriate sexual abuse awareness and prevention
education in kindergarten through grade 12; HR418, which would encourage local boards of education to screen the film, “America Imagine the World Without Her”, for students in grades eight and eleven. Additional bills may be added to the agenda. The House Education Committee will hear the following bills: SB2,
students who complete certain coursework relating to postsecondary coursework
can be awarded a high school diploma; HB16,
would require that no high school which receives funding from Quality Basic
Education Act shall participate in or sponsor interscholastic sports events unless
students enrolled in magnet schools can participate under certain conditions; HB131,
the End to Cyberbullying Act; HB296,
scholarship program; special needs students, expand eligibility for refugee
students; HB271,
would allow for the development of charter-schools-in-the-workplace; HB372
would enact the Utopian Academy for the Arts Act; HR303, would encourage the State Board of Education to develop
and implement a comprehensive civics education curricula. Bills may be added. The House and Senate will reconvene for the 24th
day of the legislative session on Monday. After Monday, there will be only six legislative days remaining for
bills to crossover. The activities under
the Gold Dome next week should be rapid and interesting to follow.
