The workshop is designed to provide educators with a five-step problem solving model for re-thinking behavior management when working with or consulting with someone who works with the most difficult to manage students. This model focuses on psychological/emotional issues that teachers face with difficult students and information about the "underlying functions and purpose" of misbehavior(s) along with specific interventions and strategies. In this workshop, the participants will:
- Use a five-step problem solving model for dealing with difficult to manage behaviors. These 5 steps include 1) strategies for defining and identifying those behaviors that are the "real" problem, 2) strategies for dealing with the emotional impact that difficult students have on teachers and the classroom climate, 3) information on effective ways to link the purpose and function of behavior with interventions, 4) strategies for using effective communication styles with difficult students, and 5) integrating steps 1-4 to develop a comprehensive and relevant plan for difficult students and difficult classes.
- Recognize the "traps" teachers fall into when dealing with behavior problems
- Develop an understanding of reasons for student misbehaviors and learn specific strategies for dealing with many of the most common behavioral difficulties.
