Frank Howey Family Farms of Union County wins efficiency contest

In the annual Most Efficient Yield Contest, Frank Howey Family Farms of Union Co. placed first in the state with a per bushel cost of $3.39, Alison and Frank Howey received the first place award on behalf of Howey Family Farms from Dr. Richard Reich, assistant commissioner of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and Dr. Jim Dunphy, professor of crop science and soybean extension specialist with North Carolina State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the Annual Commodity Conference on Jan. 12. Howey Family Farms received an expense-paid trip to the Commodity Classic in San Antonio, Tex. from Mar. 2- 4, 2017. 


The Most Efficient Yield Contest rewards producers for achieving the lowest cost of production for soybeans on a per bushel basis. Other area winners in the most efficient yield contest were:  (Southern Coastal Plain) – Grant Andrews of Richmond Co., $4.10 per bushel; (Tidewater) – Manning Farm, Inc. of Washington Co., $4.10 per bushel; (Northern Coastal Plain) – Sanderson Farming of Wayne Co., $4.23 per bushel; and (Northern Piedmont) – Bryan Chapman of Yadkin County, $4.59 per bushel.
