January's dark and chilly days have never been a peak time for local produce, but that's not to say you can't find some lovable, fresh vegetables this winter. A hard freeze earlier in the month took a toll on many crops, but quick-growing radishes -- some varieties are market-ready in as little as three weeks -- offer a vibrant and verdant way to get some greens despite the brisk temperatures.A member of the vast brassica family of vegetables that includes broccoli, cabbage, kale, turnips and countless other crisper bin staples, radishes can be found in dozens of varieties on the tables of area farmers.
