North Carolina Annual Crop Report

Corn for Grain

• North Carolina farmers harvested 940,000 acres of corn for grain in 2016, up 210,000 acres from 2015.

• Yield averaged 129 bushels per acre, up 16 bushels from the 2015.

• Production at 121.3 million bushels was 47% higher than the 2015 total of 82.4 million.    

Cotton

• Cotton acres harvested in 2016 totaled 260,000 acres down 95,000 acres from the 355,000 harvested in 2015

. • Yield averaged 665 pounds per acre, down 48 pounds from last year.

• Production at 360,000 bales was down 32% from the 527,000 bales produced in 2015      

       
Peanuts

• North Carolina farmers harvested 99,000 acres of peanuts in 2016, 12,000 acres more than the 87,000 acres harvested in 2015.  

• Yield per acre at 3,450 pounds was down 30 pounds per acre from 2015.

• Production at 341.6 million pounds was up 13% from 302.8 million pounds of peanuts produced in 2015.

 
Soybeans

• Soybean acres harvested in 2016 totaled 1.66 million. This was down 70,000 acres from the 1.73 million acres harvested in 2015.

• Yield averaged 35 bushels per acre. 3 bushels above the 32 bushels per acres recorded in 2015.

• Production totaled 58.1 million bushels, up 5% from last year’s production of 55.4 bushels.  
   

Sweet Potatoes

• North Carolina farmers harvested 95,000 acres of sweet potatoes in 2016, up 9,000 acres from 2015.

• Yield averaged 180 cwt. per acre, down 10 cwt. from 2015.

• Production at 17.1 million cwt. was up 5% from last year’s production of 16.3 million cwt.  


Tobacco

• North Carolina farmers harvested 166,000 acres of tobacco in 2016, down 7,000 acres from last year.

• Burley tobacco yield averaged 1,800 pounds per acre while Flue-Cured tobacco yield averaged 2,000 pounds per acre.

• Production was down 13% for flue-cured tobacco at 330.0 million pounds and down 3% for burley tobacco at 1.8 million pounds.
