New honeybee threat discovered – a surfactant

Penn State University researchers have discovered laboratory evidence that a non-ionic surfactant used with pesticides makes honeybee larvae significantly more susceptible to black queen cell virus. The virus causes queen bee larvae to turn black and die. The study involved Sylgard 309, an organosilicone adjuvant used extensively with pesticides in almonds, winegrapes and tree fruit.
