The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Agronomic Services Division recently added Chatham County to the list of counties served by regional agronomist Josh Mays as part of a reorganization of regions.

North Carolina growers have access to the advisory services of the department through a regionally based network of agronomists. Mays also covers Anson, Guilford, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph and Richmond counties.

Mays holds a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education and professional service from N.C. A&T State University and an associate’s degree in turf management from N.C. State University. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in agricultural education and professional service from N.C. A&T State University.

Mays has previous on-farm experience as a crops unit manager at Sandhills Research Station in Jackson Springs, and was owner and operator of an agronomic consulting business. He has interest in organic and sustainable crop production, including a project as part of his masters degree work with organic strawberry production.

“I encourage growers in Chatham County to make use of our agronomic services and Josh’s expertise in the field, especially dealing with the array of horticultural and field crops and the soil types in this region,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “He will be a knowledgeable resource for growers seeking to optimize crop nutrients or manage plant-parasitic nematodes.”

Regional agronomists are part of the Field Services Section of the department’s Agronomic Services Division. They provide advice on crop fertilization, nutrient management, lime needs, soil testing, plant tissue analysis, use of animal wastes and composts, nematode analysis, and testing of source water and nutrient solutions.
