$49B BAT/Reynolds deal clears U.S. antitrust hurdle

The proposed $49 billion merger between British American Tobacco and Winston-Salem-based Reynolds American Inc. has cleared the U.S. antitrust hurdle. Reynolds officials said Thursday morning that a waiting period under the HartScott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 relating to the deal has expired without a request for additional information by the U.S. Department of Justice or the Federal Trade Commission.
