Triad manufacturer gets FDA clearance to produce 'flake' for food packaging

Greensboro-based Unifi, Inc. recently announced that it has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to produce plastic "flake" from recycled water bottles for use in the manufacturing of food packaging including trays and baskets for fresh fruits, vegetables and eggs. The "letter of no objection" from the FDA means that Unifi (NYSE: UFI) can now produce flake — essentially shredded down pieces of plastic bottles — from its $28 million bottle processing center in Reidsville that opened in September.
