Burger King pledged today to use only chicken raised in accordance with Global Animal Partnership (GAP) animal welfare standards, animal activist group Mercy for Animals announced in a news release.

GAP standards will require Burger King’s chicken suppliers to breed only higher-welfare strains of chickens, reduce the stocking density of the birds, improve light levels and litter quality inside barns, and use controlled atmosphere stunning to render the birds unconscious before slaughter. Burger King will use third-party auditors to ensure compliance.

Burger King will implement the standards in full by 2024. Chipotle, Red Robin, Quiznos, Panera, and Starbucks recently have made similar commitments.

Owned by Restaurant Brands International, Burger King is the nation’s fourth-largest quick-service restaurant chain with more than 15,000 U.S. locations.
