NC March 2017 hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on March 1, 2017 totaled 9.2 million head, down 1% from December 1, 2016. Market hogs, at 8.3 million head, were up 5% from last year but down 1% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 880,000 head, unchanged from last year and last quarter. The State’s pig crop during the December 2016 – February 2017 period totaled 4.5 million head, unchanged from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 460,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 9.9, which is the same as the 9.9 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 455,000 sows during the March–May and 450,000 during the June–August 2017 quarters. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
