Scientists at the Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) and Sequentia Biotech S.L. have been able to double the production of artemisinin using genetic engineering. Artemisinin and its synthetic derivatives are used to treat malaria. Low levels of artemisinin in plants and the high cost of synthetic production have made this treatment expensive. Artemisinin has also been found to have anti-tumor potential.
