Commonly confused caterpillars

Tobacco budworms (Heliothis veriscens) and corn earworms (Helicoverpa zea) are two common crop-damaging caterpillars. They both feed on a variety of crops, including tobacco, cotton, and soybeans, and look nearly identical.  How can you tell them apart?
