Lawmakers consider money to get fresh food into 'deserts' - including some in Winston-Salem

A state House bill would provide up to $5,000 apiece toward helping small food retailers offer more fresh fruits and vegetables to food deserts in their communities. A state House Agriculture committee discussed on Tuesday, but didn’t vote, whether to create a fund through House Bill 387, titled the “Corner Store Initiative.” The bill has Rep. Donny Lambeth, R-Forsyth, as a primary sponsor and solid bipartisan support.
