Hurricane season begins June 1, and Commissioner Troxler says it’s time for farmers to get ready for it.

Researchers at N.C. State University say this year will be in line with the overall averages since 1950; the Atlantic basin could produce 11 to 15 tropical storms and hurricanes. Of those, four to six could become hurricanes, and one to three of those could become major hurricanes.

As a new hurricane season begins, North Carolina is still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Matthew, which hit the state last October.

The NCDA&CS received about $12 million from the General Assembly late last year to help farmers remove storm debris from streams, and repair farm roads, farm ponds and dams. But the needs are much greater. Commissioner Troxler says he will continue to work with legislators to help N.C.’s agricultural community recover from Matthew.

At the same time, he encourages farmers to review their disaster plans and get ready for the hurricane season. Planning helps farmers protect their families, workers, equipment and buildings.

It’s important to have backup plans for electricity and drinkable water for the farm. And livestock operations should maintain emergency plans that address power needs and on-site feed capabilities. Also, identify places to relocate animals from low-lying areas.
