The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an indefinite extension to the dates by which manufacturers will have to comply with new nutrition label rules.

FDA finalized the new label rules in May 2016, at the time setting a compliance date for most food markers for July 26, 2018, and an additional year beyond that for those with less than $10 million in annual food sales. Feedback from industry and consumer groups, however, convinced the agency that more time would be needed for further FDA guidance and to print updated nutrition facts labels.

“The framework for the extension will be guided by the desire to give industry more time and decrease costs, balanced with the importance of minimizing the transition period during which consumers will see both the old and the new versions of the label in the marketplace,” FDA said.

The agency said it would provide specifics around the extension through a Federal Register notice at a later time.
