Brazilian cattlemen are urging the federal government in that country to overhaul its Food and Mouth Disease vaccination program to address concerns that prompted the U.S. to ban Brazilian fresh beef last week.

A national council of cattle ranchers, known as the CNPC, has asked the government to halve the doses, administer the vaccines just beneath the skin instead of in the muscle of the animals, and remove saponin from the vaccines, according to a report by Reuters.

Brazil’s government requires ranchers to administer FMD vaccines to animals twice per year, the report states.
Among the problems that the United States cited when banning imports of Brazilian beef last week were abscesses, which Brazilian ranchers blame on the vaccines.

CNPC also is asking Brazil’s government to eliminate vaccinations in 12 states that account for some 120 million head of cattle and have not reported an FMD case in more than two decades.
