Piedmont Custom Meats Inc. is investing $4.15 million to purchase and renovate a vacant building in Asheboro, N.C., where it will open a cutting and packaging operation that will create 40 jobs, the Randolph County Economic Development Corp. said on its website.

The company has purchased the former Yates Country Ham building and will add positions including meat cutters, inspectors and warehouse personnel with an average wage of about $34,000.

Randolph County and the city of Asheboro each approved $12,500 worth of incentives for the expansion, making the company eligible for a state building reuse grant worth $500,000, the development organization said.

Piedmont Custom Meats also operates a USDA-inspected processing plant in Caswell County, N.C., that offers slaughter, fabrication, custom cutting and packaging for beef, pork, lamb, goat, bison and ostrich, according to the company’s website. Additional processing services include fresh sausage in one-pound blocks, links and patties, and smoked and cooked products including sausage, bacon, hot dogs, rendered beef and pork fat.
