French cider apples taking root; tasting room to open

French cider apples are growing closer to being part of Henderson County’s apple resume, with work ongoing at Marvin Owings’s Yellow Jacket Nursery to propagate varieties that could bring a lucrative new product for local growers.
A years-long effort by Owings and Alan Ward, owner of St. Paul Mountain Vineyards, the French varieties will be used at Ward’s Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders. The hope is that they’ll catch on and become an addition to the county’s and state’s agricultural engine.
