No county has been left behind in surveying what lies beneath the "First in Flight" state. Fifty years ago, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in North Carolina started surveying their counties and now, all 100 county-level surveys have been published. Why is it important to survey and study soils? Because soils are the foundation of every U.S. city, all infrastructure, and each ecosystem. Soils are the basis of food and fiber production and support all plant life, wildlife, and human populations. That's why we must understand how to safely and effectively use and care for these soils, now and into the future.

So join us for an old tale about a journey to the 100th county surveyed, Caswell County. Let's engage in historic maps, photos, and other chronicles to celebrate a major milestone and the importance of soil survey technology.
