All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on September 1, 2017 totaled 9.2 million head, up 3% from June 1. Market hogs, at 8.3 million head, were down 1% from last year and up 3% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 900,000 head, up 1% from last year and up 2% from June 1, 2017. The State’s pig crop during the June – August 2017 period totaled 4.8 million head, down 2% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 480,000 sows, a 1% decrease from the same time last year. Pigs saved per litter averaged at 10.05, which is down from the 10.20 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 470,000 sows during the September – November 2017 quarter and 465,000 sows during the December 2017 – February 2018 quarter.
