Will giving hens better living conditions make egg prices skyrocket?

The Humane Society recently filed an initiative in California demanding that the state's egg-laying hens be given more space—enough to essentially mandate a cage-free life for the state's birds. Not surprisingly, trade groups have decried the initiative as over-regulation at the hands of activist groups. At the same time, a new study from from Perdue University researchers seemingly suggests that improving animal welfare in the egg industry will result in dramatic price increases for the average American consumer.
