When the status of apples as a fixture in American culture was in its infancy about 400 years ago, European settlers arriving in Jamestown, Virginia, brought with them seeds that they used to cultivate apples not for eating as fruit but for making fermented cider. Today, apples’ place in American families has blossomed into an autumnal tradition of flocking to orchards across the country.
