Smithfield Foods Inc. has signed an exclusive agreement with JD.com, China’s largest retailer, to offer its pork products online in China.

More than 10 exclusive pork products will be offered through the online site as part of the deal, Smithfield -- the Virginia-based subsidiary of WH Group Ltd. of China -- and Henan Shuanghui Investment and Development Co. said.

JD.com operates JD Fresh, the largest direct sales fresh food platform in China and the largest online pork retail market in that nation. The Smithfield deal will feature bone-in cuts and variety meats with a focus on packaged frozen products that are popular with Chinese consumers.

“Through this partnership, Smithfield Foods will take yet another step in developing its e-commerce business and expand its presence in China, as we meet consumers where they shop,” Kenneth Sullivan, president and CEO of Smithfield, said in the announcement.

The agreement also calls for cooperation between the partners on big data analysis, cold chain logistics and food traceability, according to a joint news release. Shuanghui Development is the exclusive domestic agent of Smithfield in China.
