North Carolina may be a victim of its own success. When the Tar Heel State industrialized in the early 20th century, it did so in a gentle way, with textile, apparel, furniture and tobacco mills and factories spread out in small communities across the state. By the mid-20th century, North Carolina was the most industrialized state in the South. But it industrialized in such a way as to keep its small-town character. For more of this story, click here.
