The EU has banned the use of formaldehyde in chicken feed. The move is sending shockwaves through the egg industry, which for many producers in Europe is vital to eradicate salmonella in the food chain. During a vote on Wednesday in the European Commission's Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed, 26 countries voted in favor of the proposal to ban the chemical. Concerns are that formaldehyde - which is found in building materials, insulation, paint and cosmetics - poses risks to worker safety and human health.

U.S. company to sue: The U.S. animal feed maker Anitox Corp., which has spearheaded a lobbying campaign to get the EU to loosen restrictions on formaldehyde, plans to file a lawsuit, arguing that the Commission has not complied with scientific evidence proving that formaldehyde is safe to use if applied correctly. The company is also mystified how the EU voted on the matter less than 24 hours after a public consultation ended -- and without reviewing the contents or responding to concerns, two people familiar with the case told POLITICO Europe's Simon Marks.
