Tip for Your Operation: I-9 helpful hints

Recommended Practices:
o Employee completes Section 1 of Form I-9 at time of hire (i.e. by the first day that his or her employment for pay begins) an employer or employer representative can assist in the completion of the form if there are literacy or language barriers.
o Employer or employer representative completes Section 2 of the Form I-9 no later than 3 business days after employee’s first day. 
o Use of blue (preferred) or black ink to complete Form I-9 or complete using a computer if available.

Common Mistakes:
o Failure to fill out Form I-9 for current employees.
o Failure to properly fill out Form I-9 Section 1 – missing digits for dates (mm/dd/yyyy), P.O. Box information instead of a physical address, and missing signature. 
o Failure to complete Section 2 within the 3 business days from date of hire.
o Improperly completing Section 2 document requirements (incomplete information or too much information provided, not examining original documents, expired documents).
o Failure to audit Form I-9 for administrative errors at least yearly.
o Failure to write information requested legibly on form.
o Failure to provide Forms I-9 to ICE when requested for audit (usually within 72 hours).
