The U.K.-based Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) has produced a new online guide to humane killing of livestock during disease control operations.

Primarily aimed at the veterinary profession, slaughter personnel, farm staff, livestock handlers and government agencies, the guidance, formulated with input from industry experts, is intended for the global industry.

It covers a variety of species from neonates to adults, the various methods of humane  slaughter, protocols, and types of equipment available and gives examples of best practice and information on risk assessment for both the operator and animal welfare.

The guide can be found
here.

HSA is also developing interactive multi-media options for the guide, aimed at enhancing the users’ experience by allowing them to test their knowledge and take part in simulated situations to make the training more realistic.

HSA is a non-profit organization that provides education and training in the fields of transport, marketing and slaughter in the United Kingdom and around the world.
