Critics blast MFC vote on fishing licenses

In the wake of the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission's (MFC) decision last week to approve new criteria for licensing commercial fishermen, commercial fishing advocates condemned the action and vowed to carry the fight to the state legislature.
 By a 5-4 vote on Feb. 15, the MFC — a nine-member body appointed by the governor — redefined the qualifications for a commercial fishing license with less stringent rules than those previously presented that did not include specific fishing income requirements.
