The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) today praised the Senate confirmation of Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) first Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation. Northey served as NASDA President from 2011 to 2012.

“NASDA is thrilled the Senate has finally confirmed Bill Northey and we look forward to working with him as Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation,” said NASDA CEO Dr. Barbara P. Glenn. “His leadership and passion for serving agriculture made him an invaluable leader within NASDA. His experience as Iowa Secretary of Agriculture and his expertise on conservation, water quality, and the needs of producers will be tremendous assets to USDA.”

Northey is a fourth generation farmer from Spirit Lake, Iowa who grows corn and soybeans. Northey returned to Spirit Lake to farm with his grandfather after graduating from Iowa State University in 1981. He is serving his third term as Iowa Secretary of Agriculture after being reelected for the second time in November of 2014. As Secretary, Northey was instrumental in advancing the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy and co-chaired the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Task Force as one of his many state leadership roles. As NASDA advances our Farm Bill priorities, particularly with respect to enhancing locally led, voluntary, and incentive-based conservation programs, Under Secretary Northey will be instrumental in ensuring producers have the tools they need to be successful.

NASDA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association which represents the elected and appointed commissioners, secretaries, and directors of the departments of agriculture in all fifty states and four U.S. territories. To learn more about NASDA, please visit www.nasda.org.
