The Plant Based Foods Association, a newcomer to food industry lobbying, is issuing its first-ever farm bill agenda today. The upshot is the group wants the farm bill to invest more in specialty crops.

The association, which recently added almond giant Blue Diamond Growers as a member, is also asking for more research into plant protein and additional support for organic agriculture. It is also seeking to block language that would define terms like milk, cheese, meat or egg (think almond milk, nut cheese or plant-based eggs). The group is sending its list of priorities to both the House and Senate agriculture committees.

"Given the growing consumer interest in plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy products, PBFA strongly encourages the Committee to consider agricultural policies to promote a more competitive marketplace," said Michele Simon, PBFA's executive director. "For too long, the status quo has given the conventional meat and dairy sectors an unfair economic advantage; it's time to level the playing field."
