Coal is on the decline, natural gas on the rise at N.C. utilities

Natural gas was responsible for about 30 percent of the state’s electricity in 2016, more than coal. Coal was responsible for about 60 percent of North Carolina’s energy generation in 2006, a number that declined to under 30 percent as of 2016, the most recent full year for which the federal Energy Information Administration (EIA) has reported data.
