There are an estimated 48 million cases for foodborne illness in the United States every year. Many of these preventable illnesses are attributed to violations in handling in retail establishments. The North Carolina Food Code requires certification of a person-in-charge. The Safe Plates Certified Food Protection Manager training program is offered by NC Cooperative Extension Agents at local county centers. Managers trained in NC Safe Plates create a work environment that minimizes food safety risks in their restaurants, cafeterias, and grocery stores through best practices, open communication, and thoughtful practice.
