Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald’s Corp. has established a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to its restaurants and offices by 36 percent by 2030 as part of a program also involving its franchisees and suppliers.

The fast food giant said the program will set 2015 as the base year as it strives to prevent 150 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from being released over the next 12 years. The overall effect is the equivalent of removing 32 million passenger cars off the road for a year or planting 3.8 billion trees and growing them for 10 years, McDonald’s said in a news release.

The effort will include such efforts as adding LED lighting, energy efficient kitchen equipment, sustainable packaging, recycling programs at restaurants and supporting sustainable agriculture practices with its suppliers and producers.

McDonald’s also will prioritize action to reduce its carbon footprint in terms of beef production, restaurant energy use and waste management. These segments alone account for 64 percent of the company’s global emissions, McDonald’s added.

McDonald’s has more than 37,000 locations in 120 markets worldwide with more than 90 percent of them operated by independent local business owners.
