The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) today praised Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant’s appointment of Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Cindy Hyde-Smith to replace retiring U.S. Senator Thad Cochran.

“We congratulate Commissioner Hyde-Smith on her appointment to be the first-ever female Senator from the state of Mississippi,” said NASDA CEO Dr. Barbara P. Glenn. “Her leadership and passion for serving agriculture throughout her lifetime will make her an invaluable asset to the Senate, particularly as we gear up for the next Farm Bill.”

Cindy Hyde-Smith was elected Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce by Mississippi voters in November 2011, following a 12-year career as a Mississippi State Senator for District 39. With her election, Hyde-Smith made Mississippi history as the first woman to ever be elected to the statewide position. Commissioner Hyde-Smith is currently serving on the NASDA Board of Directors and has served as the president of the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture (SASDA) and the Southern U.S. Trade Association (SUSTA). She is a graduate of Copiah-Lincoln Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. Hyde-Smith and her husband Mike are the proud parents of Anna-Michael, the family’s fifth generation farmer. Together, they raise beef cattle and are partners in Lincoln County Livestock, a local stockyard auction market in Brookhaven, Mississippi.

NASDA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association which represents the elected and appointed commissioners, secretaries, and directors of the departments of agriculture in all fifty states and four U.S. territories. To learn more about NASDA, please visit www.nasda.org.
