Tip for Your Operation: Farm First Aid


1. There is an emergency, now what?!
a. Make the decision to help
b. Identify any hazards
c. Ensure your personal safety
d. Wear gloves  
e. Call 911
f. Provide basic first aid until help arrives  


2. Have a stocked first aid kit, including:
a. Tape, bandages, gauze pads, gloves, alcohol wipes, duct tape and a list of emergency phone numbers.


3. Caring for a bleeding wound
a. Apply Direct Pressure:
i. Quickly inspect the wound.
ii. Using a clean absorbent pad, apply direct pressure with flats of fingers directly on point of bleeding.
iii. If a pad is not available apply direct pressure with just your gloved hand.
b. Apply Pressure Bandage:
i. Wrap a rolled gauze bandage around the limb to provide continuous pressure to the wound.
ii. Include enough pressure to control the bleeding.
iii. Avoid wrapping so tight that skin beyond the bandage becomes cool to the touch, bluish or numb. Make sure a finger can be slipped under the bandage.
c. If Bleeding Continues:
i. If blood soaks though the pad, apply another pad, leaving the initial pad in place.
ii. Apply more pressure with the palm of your hand.
iii. Call 911 if necessary.
