NC March 2018 hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on March 1, 2018 totaled 8.9 million head, down 1% from December 1,
2017. Market hogs, at 8.0 million head, were down 4% from last year and down 1% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 900,000 head, up 2% from last year but unchanged from last quarter. The State’s pig crop during the December 2017 – February 2018 period totaled 4.5 million head, unchanged from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 455,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 9.9, which is the same as the 9.9 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 465,000 sows during the March–May and 470,000 during the June–August 2018 quarters. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
