NASDA statement on Chinese tariffs on American agriculture

Following the recent announcement of Chinese tariff’s on American agricultural products as a retaliatory measure against U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs, National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) CEO Dr. Barbara P. Glenn issues the following statement:
“China is a $28 billion customer of the American agricultural industry. The tariffs China is proposing are extremely concerning to the farmers and ranchers who are already facing a very poor agricultural economy. We urge the United States and China to end this high-stakes trade war. Our integrated food and agriculture industry cannot lose another market opportunity, particularly with one of our top customers. It is imperative the administration keep the interests of agriculture in the international marketplace at the forefront. We stand ready to assist the administration to advance opportunities for U.S. producers around the world.”
NASDA represents the elected and appointed commissioners, secretaries, and directors of the departments of agriculture in all fifty states and four U.S. territories. NASDA grows and enhances agriculture by forging partnerships and creating consensus to achieve sound policy outcomes between state departments of agriculture, the federal government, and stakeholders.
