What the CBO numbers show

The Congressional Budget Office is estimating that the number of Americans on SNAP will fall over the next 10 years, but rising food costs will keep the program's overall price tag relatively steady, Helena writes. The nonpartisan CBO said participation could return to levels not seen since before the Great Recession.  In 2025, under the CWhat the cbo numbers showBO's forecast, spending on SNAP will start ticking upward as food prices rise even as numbers fall. CBO had not released breakdowns for other mandatory USDA programs as of Monday afternoon.

Years of red ink ahead: For the first time since 2012, CBO estimates that the U.S. federal budget will pass $1 trillion within the next two years - two years earlier than previously projected. Much of that is because of legislation like last month's spending bill as well as the tax overhaul passed by the GOP-led Congress.
