As the Summit of the Americas gets underway in Peru, USDA will announce today that Argentina has wrapped up technical requirements to allow for it to begin accepting imports of U.S. pork for the first time since 1992. The White House had announced the deal in August, but Argentine food safety officials needed time to review the U.S. meat inspection system. The agreement opens a market for U.S. producers that is worth potentially $10 million a year and is poised to expand, U.S. officials said.

"This breakthrough is the result of efforts by this administration to help America's farmers and ranchers reach new markets and ensure fair trade practices by our international partners," Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said in a statement.
