The vice president sat down with a series of leaders from countries across the Western Hemisphere over the weekend as he stood in for his boss at the Summit of the Americas, telling some of the U.S.'s largest trading partners that Washington was eager "to forge stronger and more balanced trade relationships across this region."

In remarks during a plenary session Saturday in Lima, Peru, Mike Pence provided an optimistic outlook on the NAFTA talks, telling attendees that "we believe we are fairly close to a deal, and we're going to be working earnestly to make that a reality for all of our nations."

Measured optimism from our neighbors: During brief public remarks to reporters before they each sat down with Pence for bilateral meetings, both the Canadian and Mexican leaders spoke about the agreement, though perhaps in more measured terms. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he looked forward to talking about the NAFTA negotiations, "which are continuing and have a very positive momentum." And Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto noted that they would talk about the deal but said it would not be the only focus of the discussion.
