Roberts told reporters after the Senate Ag hearing that he and ranking member Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) are "close" to reaching consensus on a farm bill, Catherine writes. He was noncommittal on a timetable for when the committee might release it to the public, but he said there are no "major" disagreements between himself and Stabenow. "We've done this before," he said.

Farm bill reinforcements: During the hearing, Stabenow told Perdue that ahead of a new farm bill, the USDA should staff up agencies like the Farm Service Agency and the Natural Resources Conservation Service by using the additional funds allocated by the fiscal 2018 spending law. "USDA has to enough staff to implement the farm bill quickly," she said.

Perdue said he is undertaking a strategic hiring plan to make sure the "right" number of employees are in place to meet his commitment to improving customer service and administering farm bill policies. But he couldn't promise he'd use all the available money.
