Tip for Your Operation: Heat Illness Symptoms & First Aid
Heat Stroke: * Symptoms – confusion, fainting, seizures, excessive sweating, red or hot, dry skin * First Aid - call 911, while waiting: o Place worker in shady cool area o Loosen clothing, remove outer clothing o Fan air on worker, place cold packs in armpits o Wet worker with cool water o Provide fluids o Stay with worker until help arrives
Heat Exhaustion: * Symptoms – Moist skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, light headedness, weakness, thirst, irritability, fast heart beat * First Aid o Have worker sit or lie down in a cool, shady area o Give worker plenty of water or other cool beverages to drink o Cool worker with cold compresses/ice packs o Take to clinic or emergency room for medical evaluation or treatment if signs or symptoms worsen or do not improve within 60 minutes o Do not return to work that day
