POULTRY magazine has chosen Sanderson Farms as its 2008 Industry Innovator Award winner for the company's demonstrated excellence in the U.S. poultry industry in the areas of business success, philanthropy and leadership.

The nation's fourth largest processor is being honored for its commitment to its community and employees, which has fueled its ongoing fight for labeling transparency in the industry. The company played a role in the creation of the Truthful Labeling Coalition and went forward to challenge the raised-without-antibiotics labeling on its competitors' packaging. It has also pushed USDA to more clearly define the term 'natural.'

"The Sanderson Farms name is one associated with chicken and philanthropy, and it is just that combination that pushed them to form the Truthful Labeling Coalition and subsequently put themselves in a somewhat uncomfortable position with their competitors," said POULTRY Executive Editor Yvonne Vizzier Thaxton. "They did it in a spirit of fairness to all."

Sanderson Farms joins a long list of impressive past recipients of the Industry Innovator Award, including Tyson Foods, Coleman Natural Foods, Wayne Farms LLC, Murray's Chickens, Jennie-O Turkey Store and College Hill Poultry.

The award will be presented to Sanderson Farms Oct. 2 in Washington D.C. at the National Chicken Council's 54th Annual Conference.
